Anglo American PLC is a mining company that was founded in 1917 in South Africa. Since then it has grown to operate in 14 countries across the globe and employs 90,000 people. Anglo American has a portfolio of mining operations and undeveloped resources with a focus on diamonds, copper, platinum group metals (PGMs), and bulk commodities. Its segments include De Beers, Platinum Group Metals, Copper, Iron Ore, Nickel and Manganese, Coal, and Corporate and others.
Global responsibility in engineering
The Anglo American Foundation supports programmes that align with the Group’s Sustainable Mining Plan, which is informed by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on accountability and policy advocacy, health and well-being, education, livelihoods and biodiversity. By using the Sustainable Mining Plan to shape their partnerships, the Group aims to make a positive and sustainable contribution to the communities in which they operate by reducing its environmental footprint and supporting biodiversity.
The objective of the Sustainable Mining Plan is for engineers to be more aware of their professional impact on people and the planet, and equip them with the skills and knowledge to collaborate on solutions to the biggest challenges of our time.
Purpose of partnership
- Anglo American Foundation have funded Engineers Without Borders since 2004
- Thanks to their support we have upskilled over 63,000 engineering students and practising engineers through our university Chapters and Design Challenges
- Anglo American Foundation’s support ensures that we can continue to put global responsibility at the heart of engineering
“One of the reasons why our partnership with Engineers Without Borders UK is so important is because we want more engineers that are coming out of university to understand how to build alliances in communities rather than being a huge imposition. We want them to understand the importance of being good neighbours and involvement with Engineers Without Borders UK either through a university chapter or through the Engineering for People Design Challenge does that.”
